What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often referred to as "tapping," is a psychological acupressure technique that aims to alleviate emotional distress and promote emotional well-being. It combines elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with acupressure by tapping on specific meridian points on the body.

How EFT Works

EFT operates on the premise that negative emotions are caused by disruptions in the body's energy system. By tapping on specific points while focusing on a particular issue or emotion, individuals aim to restore balance and reduce emotional pain.

Basic Steps of EFT

  1. Identify the Issue: Focus on a specific problem or emotion you want to address.

  2. Rate the Intensity: Use a scale from 0 to 10 to assess the intensity of your emotional distress related to the issue.

  3. Setup Statement: Create a statement that acknowledges the issue and expresses self-acceptance (e.g., "Even though I feel [emotion], I deeply and completely accept myself.").

  4. Tapping Sequence: Tap on the designated meridian points while repeating the setup statement and focusing on the issue.

  5. Reassess Intensity: After completing the tapping sequence, rate the intensity of the emotion again to see if it has decreased.

Common Tapping Points

  • Karate Chop Point: Side of the hand.

  • Eyebrow Point: Beginning of the eyebrow, near the nose.

  • Side of the Eye: On the bone at the outer corner of the eye.

  • Under the Eye: On the bone directly under the eye.

  • Under the Nose: Between the nose and upper lip.

  • Chin Point: Midway between the lower lip and chin.

  • Collarbone Point: Just below the collarbone.

  • Under the Arm: About four inches below the armpit.

  • Top of the Head: Center of the top of the head.

Benefits of EFT

  • Reduces stress and anxiety.

  • Helps with emotional regulation.

  • May alleviate physical pain related to emotional issues.

  • Enhances overall well-being and resilience.

  • Can be used as a self-help tool.

Conclusion

EFT is a versatile technique that can be beneficial for a variety of emotional and psychological issues. While many individuals report positive outcomes, it is important to approach EFT as a complementary practice and consult with a qualified professional for severe emotional or psychological challenges.
